instructions, outlines product features,
and provides a brief overview. In many cases,
an electronic version of this guide will also
be available on the product CD-ROM or from
McAfee Consumer Products Division FTP site
in Adobe Acrobat .PDF format.
* A User's Guide saved on the product CD-ROM or
installed on your hard disk in Adobe Acrobat
.PDF format. McAfee Consumer Products Division

IN1 - INSTALLATION
To install McAfee VirusScan:
1. If your computer runs Windows NT Workstation v4.0,
Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP, log on to
your system as a user with administrative rights.
You must have administrative rights to install
this software on your system.
2. Insert the McAfee VirusScan CD into your computerÆs
CD-ROM drive. If an the Autorun Installation menu
does not automatically display, go to Step 3.
Otherwise, skip to Step 4.
3. Use the following procedure if the Autorun installation
menu does not display, or, if you obtained your software
via download at a McAfee web site.
a. From the Windows Start menu, select Run.
The Run dialog box displays
b. Type <X>:\SETUP.EXE in the Run dialog text box,
and click OK.
Here, <X> represents the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive or
the path to the folder that contains your extracted VirusScan
files. To search for the correct files on your hard disk or
CD-ROM, click Browse.
4. Before proceeding with the installation, Setup first
checks to see whether your computer is already running
the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) utility running
as part of your system software.
a. If your computer runs Windows XP, Windows Me, or
Windows 2000, MSI already exists on your system. If
your computer runs an earlier Windows release, you may
still have MSI in your computer if you previously
installed other software that uses MSI. In either of
these cases, Setup will display its first wizard
panel immediately. Skip to Step 5 to continue.
b. Tf Setup does not find MSI or an earlier version
of MSI is installed in your computer, it installs
files necessary to continue the installation, then
prompts you to restart your computer. Click Restart
System. When your computer restarts, Setup will
continue from where it left off.
5. Refer to steps displayed on the Installation Wizard
to complete your installation.
** Important Information Regarding Windows XP Migration **
Upgrading your computer's operating system from any version of
Windows to Windows XP causes all McAfee products installed before
migration to become disabled after migration to Windows XP.
You will be made aware of this issue as you make you first attempt
to start a McAfee product (after migration) - you will be instructed
to reinstall the product. Therefore, you will need to uninstall all McAfee products
and reinstall using your installation CD or the software obtained from
McAfee via download.

* IN2 - TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
The EICAR Standard AntiVirus Test File is a
combined effort by anti-virus vendors
throughout the world to implement one
standard by which customers can verify their
anti-virus installations.
To test your installation, copy the following
line into its own file, then save the file
with the name EICAR.COM.
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
The file size will be 68 or 70 bytes.
Next, start your anti-virus software and allow
it to scan the directory that contains
EICAR.COM. When your software scans this file,
it will report finding the EICAR test file.
Note that this file is NOT A VIRUS. Delete the
file when you have finished testing your
installation to avoid alarming unsuspecting
users.

KN1 - KNOWN ISSUES
* VirusScan's VShield on-access scanner (OAS) - by design -
does not by identify infected files compressed into zip
archives until the user extracts the files from the archive.
* Insufficient Drive Space messages:
Free drive space, in addition to the amount described
under "System Requirements - MB of hard disk space",
must be available to run Setup and install your
McAfee product. The amount of additional space depends
upon your computer's Operating System and its configuration.
If, during setup, you receive an "insufficient drive space"
message, exit setup and remove unnecessary files from your
computer. Re-start Setup. Perform these steps as necessary
until you do not receive an insufficient drive space message."
* Users of PSION devices upgrading their computer's
operating system to Windows 2000 or Windows XP
require PsiWin v2.3.3 (or higher) to connect
with their wireless device. The latest version
of this software is available at:
http://www.psion.com.
* Safe & Sound is only available for Windows 95, Windows 98
and Windows Me. For more information about Safe & Sound
please refer the on-line help or your Getting
Started Guide.
* Disk defragmentation programs move files as
they work to maximize hard disk efficiency.
If you have the VShield scanner; the
VirusScan application; or another
application active during a disk
defragmentation operation, your
defragmentation program might tell you that
it cannot find the active application
files. This is normal and does not mean
that the files do not exist. To avoid error
messages like this, close all open
applications and disable the VShield
scanner, then run your disk defragmentation
operation again.
* You cannot use .VSC files you created for
use with VirusScan version 4.0.3 or
earlier, to start scan operations with this
VirusScan release. This VirusScan release
will not correctly interpret all of the
settings saved in the older .VSC file.
* If you want to use the Internet Filter
module to prevent users from accessing a
website, you can do so by adding its IP
address or its URL to a list of banned
sites. However, if your Internet access is
via a proxy server, and you want to list
the siteÆs IP address, you must add the IP
address to the list of Banned URLs, rather
than to the list of Banned IP addresses.
* If you upgrade your operating system from
Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows
Millennium Edition to Windows 2000, your
VirusScan software does not function
correctly. This is because the version
installed on your Windows system does not
include files that are required for use in
a Windows NT environment such as Windows
2000. We recommend that you uninstall the
VirusScan software from your Windows 95 or
Windows 98 system before upgrading to
Windows 2000. When Windows 2000 has been
installed, reinstall the VirusScan
program.
* If you update your .DAT files from a UNC
shared folder on a Windows NT system, using
an account other than the account of the
currently logged in user, the Windows
operating system allows that UNC shared
folder to be accessible to the currently
logged on user until the computer is
rebooted. In order to improve the security
of the UNC shared folder, McAfee recommends
that you designate it "Read only."
* The Restore System functionality in Windows
Millennium Edition preserves all deleted
files. As a result, if you select "Delete"
as the scannerÆs response to detecting an
infection, the file is not actually
deleted, but moved to the RESTORE folder,
from which the VirusScan software cannot
delete it. Microsoft refers to this
condition in an article located at the
following URL.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q263/4/55.ASP
In order to avoid repeated detection of an
infected file that cannot be deleted, the
on-demand scanner excludes the RESTORE
folder from scanning activities, by
default. (You can remove that exclusion.)
However, the on-access scanner does not
exclude the RESTORE folder. If on-access
scanning is enabled, and you use the
Restore System function, any infection in
the RESTORE folder will be detected.
* VirusScan 6.0 does not support scanning
of e-mail received via CC:Mail.
* Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5 or
later creates a zero-byte file
corresponding to any file you are
downloading from the internet. If you have
enabled the Download Scan module, and the
file you are downloading is infected,
VirusScan deletes the file from the
temporary folder where it placed it for
examination. However, because it is holding
a zero-byte file, Internet Explorer
reports that the file has been downloaded,
even though VirusScan has already deleted
it.
* The VirusScan Installer includes an
Uninstaller function that removes
previously installed anti-virus software,
including McAfee VirusScan v5.1, and other
anti-virus software products produced by
McAfee and most other major manufacturers.
When the Uninstaller removes some
anti-virus software programs, it may
trigger the uninstallation process native
to those programs. As a result:
- rebooting may occur without warning.
- the previously installed anti-virus
software may generate messages while
they are being uninstalled by the
VirusScan installer. Consult the
documentation for the previously
installed to determine what effect,
if any will result from accepting or
ignoring these messages.
- In the unusual situation where the
previous installation was a McAfee
retail anti-virus product, such as
VirusScan v5, the uninstallation may
generate a Dr Watson, or simply fail.
McAfee recommends that previously
installed retail versions be removed
using the Windows Add/Remove Programs
feature before installing VirusScan.
* The on-access scanner may time-out while
scanning a file on a drive that is mapped
to a Novell NetWare volume, if the client
is running Microsoft Windows NT, and is
using Novell NetWare client 4.8. McAfee
recommends that you not attempt to scan
network drives from a Windows NT
workstation that is running that version of
the Novell client.
* If you use Novell Client32 on your system
for access to Novell NetWare servers,
McAfee recommends that you reboot your
system after you install VirusScan software
in order to activate all VirusScan
components with proper access to Novell
NetWare servers.
* Scheduled on-demand tasks cannot run on
Windows NT systems unless a user is logged
on at the time that the task is scheduled
to run.
* When multiple users are used in a WinXP, 2K, or
NT system, the user has the ability to secure
folders located on an NTFS-formatted drive.
These secured folders cannot be scanned by any
user other than its owner, or those authorized
by the owner, with VSC. To scan these folders,
the owner or authorized user of the folder,
must log on and execute the scan.

FQ1 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Regularly updated lists of frequently asked questions
about McAfee products are also available on the
Networks Associates website, on CompuServe, and on
America Online.
Q: I am installing new software on my computer,
and the manual recommends disabling any anti-
virus software. How do I disable the VShield
scanner without uninstalling it?
A: If you are running the VirusScan software on
a Windows NT Workstation v4.0 or Windows 2000
Professional system, you must first log into
your system with administrative rights, then
follow the steps outlined below in order to
disable the VShield scanner. If you are
running the software on a Windows 95 or
Windows 98 system, you can follow these
steps immediately:
1. Right-click the VShield icon located in your
system tray next to the system clock,
then choose exit from the shortcut menu.
You will be prompted to load VShield.
Click Yes.
2. After you install your new software, you can
reactivate the VShield scanner by double-
clicking the VirusScan Central shortcut on
your desktop, or from the Windows Start menu
select Start > Programs > McAfee > McAfee
VirusScan. When you are prompted to load
VShield, click Yes.
Q: I've activated the VirusScan software's
heuristic scanning option, and now it identifies
some viruses as "unknown." Why?
A: The heuristic scanning feature looks for certain
"virus-like" characteristics in the files it
scans. When it finds a sufficient number of
these characteristics, the program concludes
that the file is infected. This powerful
technique allows the program to discover
viruses that are so new that they do not yet
have names or identities. The program will,
however, identify viruses by name when they
match its list of known viruses.
Q: When it detects an infection in files compressed
in .CAB or ZIP-SFX format, why doesn't the
VirusScan program clean, delete, or move the
files?
A: Because files compressed in .CAB and ZIP-SFX
formats can include a Microsoft Authenticode
certificate, altering the files can render them
unusable. To avoid this possibility, the
program does not clean, delete, or move
infected files compressed in .CAB or ZIP-SFX
format. McAfee recommends that you decompress
any infected files compressed in these formats,
then run your scan operation again to clean
the uncompressed files.
Q: The VirusScan software detected a virus on my
system, but it is not one of the default
files listed in its Program Extensions dialog
box. Therefore, I suspect it might be a false
detection. What can I do to verify a detected
virus?
A: If you suspect a false detection on a non-
executable file, run SCAN.EXE, the VirusScan
command line scanner, to verify the infection.
If the VirusScan application detects a virus and
SCAN.EXE does not, download the latest .DAT file
update, then scan your system again. If the
VirusScan application still detects a virus that
you suspect is a false detection, please report
the issue to Networks Associates technical
support.
Q: Can I update McAfee data (.DAT) files to detect
new viruses?
A: Yes, you can use the Instant Updater utility
by clicking the 'Update' button on the Central
home page. This will launch the Instant Updater
utility which will check the DAT file version that
you are using and update them to the current version.
You can also go to the following website:
http://www.mcafee-at-home.com
and download the latest superDAT update utility.
Q: Why are additional extensions added to the
User Specified Files list?
A: As the McAfee Anti-Virus Emergency Response
Team (AVERT) finds viruses that can infect
new file types, it adds new extensions to the
default extensions list to enhance security.
For instance, new viruses can infect
Microsoft Office binder files, so the default
extensions list now includes the file extension
for these binder files so that VirusScan will
examine them for viruses.
Q: I thought I could right-click Microsoft Office
.DO?, .XL?, or .OBD files, then choose Scan for
Viruses from a shortcut menu in order to start a
scan operation. I have Microsoft Office
installed, but when I try this, it doesn't work.
Why not?
A: If you installed Microsoft Office after you
installed the VirusScan software, you might need
to reinstall the VirusScan software to enable
context-sensitive shortcut menus.
Q: I'm running Microsoft Exchange Client 5.0, and
the icons that tell me that the VirusScan
application can run a scan operation from within
Exchange aren't showing on my toolbar. Why?
A: Because of a limitation in Microsoft Exchange
Client v5.0, the two Exchange On-Demand scan
icons will not appear in the Exchange toolbar.
Consult your Exchange documentation to learn how
to place these icons onto the toolbar.
Q: I'm running Microsoft Office 2000, and the
VirusScan icons that let me configure and run
scan operations aren't showing anywhere
in my Outlook 2000 toolbar. Are they hidden?
A: By default, Microsoft Office hides icons that
you have not used in a long time. To see the
icons, click the arrows at the far right of the
Outlook toolbar.
Q: I have a .VSC settings file I used with the last
VirusScan version I had on my system. Can I
still use this file with this VirusScan release?
A: No, this VirusScan version does not interpret
some of the settings in earlier .VSC file
versions in the same way, so earlier files will
not work correctly. McAfee recommends that you
create and save your settings in a new .VSC file
for use with this version.
